Hands-on to support Wool Week

Ulster Carpets took a hands-on approach to support this year’s Wool Week.

The Campaign for Wool’s annual event aims to champion and educate consumers about the benefits of wool, whilst showcasing innovative and contemporary wool products and raising awareness of wool as a planet-friendly fibre that biodegrades in the land and in the ocean.

As well as a range of promotional activities to endorse wool, staff took part in a hand weaving workshop with talented Irish Fibre Artist Jacqui-May Wylie of The Copper Otter.

Sitting alongside the inspirational setting of Lough Neagh, not far from our Portadown headquarters, members of the marketing team were expertly guided through a series of traditional weaving techniques using a wide variety of ethically and locally sourced yarn and textiles. The end result was beautifully crafted wall hangings that reflect the beauty of a natural material that has been used for centuries.

Northern Ireland has a rich heritage of weaving and Ulster Carpets has pioneered new technology to ensure this tradition continues. However, the basic principles of weaving using quality wool are as important today as they were when Ulster Carpets was established over 80 years ago.

Like the carpets created by Ulster, Jacqui-May’s bespoke pieces display a unique richness and an individual story of craftsmanship and creativity. Both also utilise the inherent benefits of wool.

Tracey Braziel, Marketing Manager, Ulster Carpets, said, “The inherent benefits of wool are at the heart of every Ulster carpet and we have built our success on selecting the best wool from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand.

“While we have developed and patented our own weaving system to create luxury wool-rich carpets, the basic principles of weaving remain the same, so this was a great opportunity for our staff to gain a better understanding of the process and the importance of using quality wool.”

With enhanced strength, durability and performance, the natural characteristics of wool deliver health and hygiene benefits as well as improved warmth, acoustic and safety properties. Ulster Carpets selects the best wool from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand and uses this as the starting point to create luxury carpets for homes, hotels, casinos and cruise liners across the world.
