With a hospital having operated on the site of the new InterContinental Lyon – Hôtel Dieu for over eight centuries, it is apt that Studio Jean-Philippe Nuel used its beautiful medicinal gardens as his inspiration.
Ulster Carpets worked closely with Jean-Philippe Nuel to realise the highly respected architect and interior designer’s vision for the carpet in the elegant ballroom that has been transformed as part of the ambitious project.
Explaining how he took inspiration from the hotel’s past, Jean-Philippe said, “The ballroom carpet at the InterContinental Lyon – Hôtel Dieu is part of the main renovation of this building from the 18th Century, built by Jacques-Germain Soufflot.
“This building, which was a hospital in the past, had several interior courtyards. Some of these courtyards were displaying medicinal gardens – a theme that inspired the design created for this custom made carpet.”
The beautiful ballroom carpet design complements a style of timeless elegance within an overall aesthetic that is carefully balanced against the building’s distinctive architectural features.
The richness of the carpet’s feature colours exudes classic sophistication. Yet modern styling has not been ignored, with a section of the intricate carpet design reflected in the signature lighting. This holistic vision has created a vibrant reawakening of the space, with the detailed carpet design providing a canvas on which to build upon.
In addition to the InterContinental Lyon – Hôtel Dieu, the extensive redevelopment of this 375 metre long building includes a new commercial centre incorporating shops, bar, restaurants, and office accommodation. The stunning courtyard, which has also been brought back to life, adds to the beauty of this wonderful setting.
