The Story

The Grand Central Hotel in Belfast is the seventh addition to Hastings Hotels‘ luxurious collection (Hastings Hotels is the largest, family owned independent hotel group in Northern Ireland). Following a £53 million investment Windsor House, a former office block, has been transformed into this glamorous new 300 room 5 star hotel in Belfast’s up and coming Linen Quarter.

The Grand Central Hotel is named after one of Belfast’s most popular former hotels, fondly remembered for its flair and decoration. The new hotel’s interior design scheme sees artefacts from the original hotel thoughtfully placed alongside local stories and contemporary finishes evoking feelings of nostalgia in a luxury modern environment.

On the ground and first floors the hotel’s striking interiors make the most of fantastic double height spaces flooded by natural light. The interior design creates clearly defined areas that feel similar and coherent, yet maintain their own identity. For the carpets in these areas the design team at Ulster Carpets worked with Belfast-based RPP Architects and Amanda Ramsey from Interiors and Floor Design to create an organic abstract design with lots of texture. Subtle changes of greens to gold help to define each area and ensure flow through the restaurant, afternoon tea and bar areas.

In the guestrooms and suites the décor emphasises warmth, comfort and luxury. The carpets design for these areas is a play on geometrics in soft grey tones, perfectly complimenting the tactile fabrics and furnishings in the rooms.

Located on the 23rd floor The Observatory Bar, the highest bar in Ireland, offers spectacular panoramic views over Belfast. The Grand Central’s jewel called for a bold carpet design. Featuring strong watermark type textures and warm copper highlights, the carpet adds to the sense of being in an iconic space.

Ulster Carpets is proud to have worked with the Hastings Group for many years and was delighted to have been chosen once again to supply over 12,000m² of bespoke carpets for this exciting new venue.
