Nestled on the edge of the world-famous St Andrews Links, where rolling fairways meet the dramatic Scottish coastline, the Old Course Hotel combines five-star luxury with the warmth and character of Scottish hospitality.
This distinctive sense of place provided the inspiration for a series of bespoke carpets created as part of the hotel's fourth-floor refurbishment. The project encompassed the transformation of the iconic Road Hole Restaurant, Road Hole Bar and the newly redesigned Boardroom, each space reimagined to enhance the guest experience while celebrating the hotel's unique heritage.
Richmond International are renowned for carefully tailoring the interior design to a venue's location and cultural settings and for the Old Course Hotel they found a kindred spirt in Ulster Carpets.
Pabllo Venancio, Designer at Richmond International, commented, “Collaborating with Ulster on the bespoke carpet for the Old Course Hotel was an absolute masterclass in craftsmanship and ease. From initial concept to the final weave, their technical precision and dedication made the entire process seamless.
“Drawing deep inspiration from the rich heritage of local Scottish tartans, we wanted to create something that felt inherently rooted in the St Andrews landscape yet timeless in its execution. The resulting installation is nothing short of iconic - a stunning, tactile tribute to the iconic surroundings that anchors the entire space with warmth and texture."
Working in close collaboration with the team at Richmond International was our London-based Design Studio Lead, Lois Norman.
“Throughout the design process, we explored a wide range of concepts, but with Scottish hospitality at the heart of these spaces, it quickly became clear that a tartan-inspired approach offered the strongest connection to the hotel's identity.
“The brief from Richmond International called for an atmosphere that felt calm, welcoming and refined. We therefore developed a warm, sophisticated colour palette that reflects the elevated luxury synonymous with the Old Course Hotel.
“With panoramic views across the legendary St Andrews links serving as a backdrop, it was equally important that the carpets complemented their surroundings, adding depth and texture to the interiors without competing for attention.”
The result is a custom design that balances heritage and contemporary elegance, enriching the guest experience while honouring one of Scotland's most iconic hospitality destinations.
