Recyling Handtrials

Handtrials have an important role in the design process, helping designers and clients finalise colour, texture and pattern before production begins.

Although they have a relatively short life, they contain valuable materials that still have more to offer once their original purpose has been fulfilled.

Rather than treating returned handtrials as waste, we wanted to find a way to keep those materials in use. Today, returned handtrials from any global project can be sent to our recycling facility in Devon, where they are recycled into our underlay products.

When returned, the handtrials are shredded and then this material follows one of two routes. The first is that it can be used in the manufacture of Wool Felt, our contract underlay made using recovered wool fibre, or, the second, as part of Axfelt Triple Layer Underlay. Both extend the life of valuable materials beyond a single use.

How can I return my handtrials?

If you're close to our London Design Studio, simply drop your handtrials into the studio. They will be included in our regular monthly transfer to Devon, making use of an existing journey.

If you're based elsewhere, handtrials can be returned directly to our recycling facility in Devon. If you're working across multiple projects, we encourage returning them together in a single shipment, where practical. Consolidating returns helps reduce transport emissions while ensuring the materials can be recycled into new products.
