Most people have only ever heard of a “tog” rating in relation to their duvet, but did you know carpets have a tog rating too!
In basic terms this rating lets the consumer know how much heat the carpet absorbs. For those with conventional central heating systems, a higher tog rating will add an extra layer of insulation to your home, helping to reduce heating bills and keep your room cosy.
If you have underfloor heating however, a high tog rating carpet could hinder all the hard work your heating system is doing and absorb all the heat before it reaches you! It is important to also take into consideration the tog rating of your underlay and treat this as a combined total. Recent research from the Carpet Foundation recommends a maximum total tog rating of carpet and underlay of 2.5 when fitting on top of underfloor heating. While it may take a room slightly longer to heat up, the research has shown that the carpet will actually help the room hold the heat for longer.
Most of our wool-rich Ulster products have a tog rating of between 1.5 and 2.0. If you are concerned about how a particular product will perform with an underfloor heating system, please ask your local Ulster retailer for advice. Many underlay manufacturers now also produce specialised products to use with underfloor heating, which your retailer will be able to recommend.
