Wool as a Material Choice

For nearly 90 years, wool has remained at the heart of every Ulster woven carpet.

We choose wool because of the way it performs. It creates carpets that are beautiful, comfortable and remarkably resilient, making it one of the most enduring flooring materials available.

Today, many of those same qualities are also recognised as environmental advantages. Wool is naturally renewable, stores carbon as it grows and, at the end of its life, is biodegradable under the right conditions. It is a material that performs exceptionally throughout its lifetime while working in harmony with natural cycles.

Nature's own performance fibre

Every wool fibre is engineered by nature.

Its unique molecular structure acts like a tiny coiled spring, allowing each fibre to stretch by up to 30% before returning to its original shape. Every time someone walks across a carpet, those fibres compress and recover again, helping the carpet retain its appearance year after year.

For busy hospitality environments, this resilience is invaluable. Hotel corridors, guestrooms and public spaces experience thousands of footsteps every day. Choosing a fibre that naturally recovers from this constant use helps extend the life of the carpet and reduce the need for premature replacement.

Wool continues to work long after a carpet has been installed.

Unlike many fibres, wool can naturally absorb moisture from the surrounding air without feeling damp. This helps reduce static electricity and contributes to a more comfortable indoor environment.

Research has also shown that wool fibres can trap Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) within their structure, while wool-rich carpets help reduce airborne dust by holding particles within the pile until they are removed through cleaning. Wool is also naturally resistant to dust mites and does not encourage bacterial growth.

Naturally safe

Wool's natural composition makes it inherently difficult to ignite.

Wool has a naturally high ignition point and produces comparatively low levels of smoke, making it particularly well suited to demanding commercial and hospitality environments.

A renewable material

Each year sheep grow a new fleece, making wool a rapidly renewable natural fibre.

As it grows, wool stores sequestered carbon absorbed from the atmosphere within the fibre itself. That carbon remains locked within the carpet throughout its service life.

At the end of its useful life, wool is biodegradable under the right conditions, allowing the fibre to naturally return to the environment rather than persisting for decades like many synthetic alternatives.

Our 100% wool carpets celebrate all of the inherent qualities that have made wool such a remarkable material in hospitality settings. Our 80/20 wool/nylon construction combines the beauty and resilience of wool with the enhanced abrasion resistance provided by nylon, making it particularly suited to the busiest hospitality environments where maximum durability is required.
