Celebrating the Golden Age of Ocean Travel at CSI Europe

We are celebrating the Golden Age of Ocean Travel with a custom carpet design created by our Senior Field Designer, Gemma Alexander, for this year’s Cruise Ship Interiors Europe Expo in London.

A time of decadence and glamour on the high seas, many of the famous ocean liners of this era were engineered and built at Belfast’s Harland & Wolff shipyard, not far from our headquarters in Portadown.

Overlooking the slipways and Belfast Lough, where famous ocean liners such as Titanic, Olympic and Oceanic were built and first launched, visionaries in the offices of Harland & Wolff played an important role in the creation of the ‘floating hotel’ and the ‘grand staircase’ – innovations which continue to influence the design of today’s cruise ships.

Gemma combined land, sea and air elements into her design. The organic textures in blue tones represent the water element and the design is an abstract interpretation of Belfast Harbour, as viewed from above – the air element.

The top layer represents land and is inspired by the famous Harland & Wolff cranes and historical images of Belfast ship building, including the building of Titanic, that show huge scaffolding and crane structures around each cruise liner.

Set in warmer, coral tones, the geometric pattern represents the latticed boom of a crane and adds extra depth and colour to the design.

“Belfast and Harland & Wolff are synonymous with the Golden Age of Ocean Travel and the famous Samson and Goliath cranes that overlook the city are a reminder of this illustrious history. So what better way of celebrating this than incorporating Belfast into our carpet design.” Gemma Alexander

As well as celebrating Belfast’s place in ocean travel’s heyday, the custom carpet design also showcases The Art of Ulster.

Making the most of the large canvas that flooring provides and allows our designers to incorporate any theme or style into the carpet design. Thanks to Ulster’s patented PSYLO™ weaving technology, there are no limits to what they can create!

This level of design excellence is the reason why Ulster’s carpets feature across the world’s hotels, casinos and cruise lines.

With current cruise design offering the opulence and style of this iconic era, make sure you come along to Booth #606 and find out how Ulster Carpets can add to the grandeur of your cruise line.
