The Story

It is fitting that the largest-ever Marine project completed by Ulster Carpets is for a cruise ship dubbed the world’s best family vacation.

Ulster Carpets remains a family-owned and run company and we are celebrating the first sailing of Icon of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean International’s game-changing Icon of the Seas is 365 metres long, is 250,800 gross tons, and has a capacity of 5,610 guests and 2,500 crew.

Featuring eight distinct ‘neighbourhoods’ – of which five are brand-new concepts – the first Icon Class ship has 2,805 staterooms, 20 decks, 7 pools, and 40 different venues to drink and dine in!

The project challenged Ulster’s design, planning, and production team like never before but the final results of over 55,000sqm of carpet epitomise our ability to create unique designs.

Creating over 75 different designs in total, Designers based in our headquarters in Portadown, Northern Ireland and in our London Design Studio produced flooring works of art to match the distinctive design and style of each area.

The family-centric style of Icon of the Seas allowed our designers to express their fun side. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Ultimate Family Townhouse.

Getting creative with the popular ‘The Floor Is Lava’ game as inspiration, our Lava Drama design brings imagination to life, allowing kids to jump from stone to stone and avoid the lava.

From fun features, our Designers needed high levels of precision for the carpets in the unique Aquadome. A visibly impressive addition to Icon of the Seas, the designs in the Aquadome Market, and AquaTheater work effortlessly together from a design perspective.

The AquaTheater added an extra level of intricacy for our planners, who had to ensure the design seamlessly moved through the AquaTheater and into the seating areas. The exacting design includes a series of curved lines that twist through the venue which added extra emphasis on our Planning Team’s skills.

Our distinctive designs feature right across all 20 decks, ranging from the main dining room and conference centre to the comedy club, casino, and Lou’s Jazz Bar. Royal Caribbean International has even put a focus on the crew areas, with our carpets adding a touch of luxury for crew.

We created unique designs for areas such as the Royal Loft Suite and the Ultimate Family Townhouse that enhance the luxury expected by guests.

Adding to the sustainable focus of Icon of the Seas, our wool-rich carpets are the perfect choice for the environmentally conscious cruise industry.

All our carpets contain at least 80% wool, which is a natural, rapidly renewable material. We enhance this further by incorporating an all-encompassing approach to sustainability that focuses on energy-efficient manufacturing and reducing waste.

With a place in maritime history, Icon of the Seas is the perfect project to demonstrate the artistic talents of our designers, the attention to detail of our Planners, and the high standards of our manufacturing. The final result is Iconic!
